Designing for California’s disaster recovery
After the LA fires, many Californians needed to replace vital records they’d lost. At the time, that meant printing an application, finding a notary, and mailing it or delivering it in person.
Compiler was tapped to figure out how to bring the process online. How do we verify someone’s identity and eligibility? What counts as a fire zone? How can we make this easy for people affected by the fires? How do we fit into CDPH's workflow? We worked through those questions and more with the CDT, ODI, and CDPH teams to ensure our solution met policy, technical, and operational requirements.
As design lead, I designed, prototyped, and tested the new flow with Californians, adapting the government's design system as needed and integrating the California IdG for identity and eligibility verification. Now, Californians can request replacement records entirely online. What used to take days or weeks can now be submitted in minutes (no printer, parking, or IRL conversation required).
